Review: Shopaholic on Honeymoon by Sophie Kinsella

The new Mr and Mrs Brandon are on honeymoon, and Becky has big plans! They've got a whole year to explore Venice, learn yoga in India, sleep in little wooden huts in South America… maybe even see penguins in the Arctic. And of course they’ll need to buy just a few essential souvenirs along the way (everyone needs a set of Murano glass goblets, after all).

They’re not just tourists, they’re travellers. Becky is sure it is just the thing that Luke needs – time to unwind. He’ll come back a changed man… with all the good bits still intact of course.

But it soon becomes clear that Luke has different plans entirely. Can Becky help him let go, or will this little disagreement threaten their whole honeymoon?

Review
I've seen the film adaptation of Confessions of a Shopaholic, and I'm pretty sure I've read some of the books (clearly in the days before Goodreads existed to help me keep track). I therefore knew what to expect from this short story, introduced as an extra 'treat' for readers to bridge the gap between a couple of the novels. Set in Venice, it gives readers an insight into the couple's honeymoon - which in Becky's case sounds more like an extended shopping trip! Becky has her endearing qualities, but she also has her irritating side, and as a frugal Yorkshirewoman all her impulsive spending is something I will never understand. Of course, this being a Shopaholic novel that was to be expected. What I didn't expect was the ending. What started out as a cute short story essentially descended into Becky throwing a massive tantrum because she couldn't have her own way, I felt sorry for poor Luke! That said, this is a short and sweet read that will please Shopaholic fans everywhere. I only wish that we could have read more about the adventures they had in the other places they visited on their 'round the world trip' too. 3/5 stars.

  1. Hmm, I'd think more mileage could be made of such a honeymoon. I haven't read any of the shopoholic books but have seen a lot around about them. Throwing a tantrum - oh dear!!
